With the spread of dsl and cable modem connections more and more people are leaving their computers connected all the time. The more time your computer is connected online, the more vulnerable you become for hackers and pirates. It is something that can’t be prevented but it can be decreased. You just have to take up more security, firewalls, etc.

ADSL, SDSL, RADSL, IDSL are highly available in NYC (all are offered in SI). It depends on which ISP/CLEC/RBOC you go to. Covad will only sell you RADSL or IDSL if you are a residnetial custoner, but will offer you SDSL if you are a small business. Rhythms and BA currently still offer ADSL to all residential customers.

There is no way a ADSL 1.5M line can go as slow as a modem line. Bandwidth is usually guaranteed to the CO, and from the CO to the POP... anything beyond that is not within the power of the ISP. It is important to note that an ISP can still OVERSELL their service, which will affect performance during peak times. ISPs need to have an upstream provider as well (usually 150Mbps OC3 lines).

Right now , on New York City, there only ADSL & SDSL are avaiable. In Staten Island, only ADSL are avaiable. I heard that basical there have some different on installtion, make SDSL difficult to popular in home use. In fact, I deel ADSL is enough for right now to use. It isn't dedicate line. Eventhough you have 1.5 M speed, but when in busy time, some report tell us, ADSL isn't fast enugh, even worse than basic 56k Speed.

I believe that it cannot prevent all of it. The internet is a good communicate way to anyone. It helps a lot already. Now we have more more choice and cheaper way for any user. It will let more people use internet and use more high speed things. (e.g. TV online, News, Music, etc…..) By the user increase rapidly, the piracy for those of it become more risky. I think just do more security for it to prevent some small thieves.

The more time computers spend logged on to the internet, the more suseptable they become to piracy. This should not be a deterent though when considering a faster connection. Technology must meet the challenge that this new medium brings in securing information over the internet. This will allow for greater expansion in all internet related fields.

High speed of the internet does not equal to the increased of illegal computer activities. But letting the fee of high speed internet drop would definitely help promoting online piracy. That's because by doing so, more and more people would let their computers stay online, so that more hackers could easily find their practice targets.

Excellent job Han, please leave that page up so I can refer to it in the future.

I cannot imagine how the piracy of copyrighted media will be stopped. In fact I think it will get much worse before it gets better. When we can no longer buy cds in stores, because they have all gone out of business, then we will be forced to start paying for the currently free online stuff like Napster.

I think it is possible somehow to prevent it. Someone might come along like always and discover something. But there is very little chance of it. Once you on line there is no guarantee of privacy no matter what you create to prevent it.

Software piracy has been around before DSL came out to the public.

Right now I dont think it is stoppable.

As long as we can all communicate through TCP/IP we can have access to any machine on the internet.

If the ISPs themselves start to monitor and do not allow DSL owners to run any types of servers then and only then will DSL piracy be lowered. Notice I said lowered not stopped.
